Default Merge layers...

OK,.. I screwed up. I'm trying to model my car and somehow I ended up having it on two different layers.. :o

Now that I'm trying to clean up the points and polys it tells me I can't connect points from different layers.

I looked in the manual (I hate that thing! ) I couldn't find that info.

Thanks,

Also,.. can anyone tell me how to take a screen shot?

Thanks again!

Yo petrograde, yes to make a screen shot just press the Print Screen button on your keyboard. Then fire up Photoshop or any other painting package and create anew doc the size of your screen and press Ctrl + V to paste your screen. And about the points problem to weld points every thing needs to be in the same layer so simply select both layers so there visible and press Ctrl+ C to copy then Ctrl + X to delete and then finally Ctrl V to paste them all back in the first layer then you can weld away.

If you use ctrl-x then you don't need to use ctrl-c, as the ctrl-x is the cut command not the delete command, so actually if you used ctrl-c and ctrl-x you would be copying the data twice. If you want to use the ctrl-c command, then you can use the delete key on the keyboard to delete.
If your using Lightwave 8, you can use the following command VIEW>LAYERS>MORE>FLATTEN LAYERS This will merge all layers into the first layer. Another option is to use the following command VIEW>LAYERS>OBJECT COLLAPSE This command will create a new object with the layers collapsed (You should be able to use the default settings for it to work). Therefore if you make a mistake you can go back to the original object, the reason you may want to do this is because you can not always undo the flatten layers command. The drop down box to the left of the layers shows your objects that are loaded. If your saving new versions as you go this should not be a problem.

For your screenshot, most photo editors, have a paste new image command which will paste the image into a new window, using the settings of that image.

sounds logical to me, that's the whole idea behind seperate layers

All you need to do is cut the layer and paste it into the one you want it in, then the merge tool will behave again.

There are some tools around as mentioned in the previous post to merge layers, but I never use them. It only complicates things, cutting and pasting works faster then yet another tool. Okay, some shift layers up if you remove one in the middle or so.

The advantage of the flatten layers becomes apparent when you have 20+ layers, you can merge all layers to once rather than one at a time. With 2 or 3 layers your correct cut and paste can be very quick especially if your not sure where to look for the flatten layers tool. But that can be corrected by creating a new menu button or keyboard shortcut that you can easily find or remember.

You can cut and paste all your layers at once by clicking right under the small square under the "f" next to the name of the object. This way you'll select all the layers at once.

Most of my "practical" hotkeys where I don't need an extendible thumb are already mapped so I have to use them wisely, but you're right I could create another button, guess I'm just lazy ;-)
